Are you standing in the way of your own success? I’ve got you.

There’s a saying about success: get out of your own damn way. I am consistently inspired by this message. Tough circumstances are small hurdles when I compare them to our own mental wall.

For example, there are external factors in taking a professional risk:  enough savings to leave a current job, childcare, support from a spouse, and enough time to work toward the goal. The list can seem insurmountable.

Yet, the internal war I wage with my clients on a regular basis is, in my opinion, the most profound. You see, if someone wants to bring out their unique, powerful voice and propel themselves forward, success is intertwined with confidence.

My clients often share a fear of “sounding stupid” or “freezing up” when they speak.  They worry they can’t “come out of their shell” or that public speaking “just isn’t for me.”

I’m not worried; all of these feelings are quite manageable.  The more nuanced question digs deeper:  “what happens if you speak up, truly shine, and impress like hell?”

Well, then you’re forced to claw your way through the dreaded territory of being uncomfortable.

You will likely be asked to speak again.

You will have to take yet another scary step toward your goal.

You’ll have to keep growing, keep learning, keep evolving.

In short, be uncomfortable.

I recently interviewed Career Transition Coach (and a dear friend) Cory Logan on Instagram Live, and she spoke so poignantly about the role of our “inner critic.”  In helping her clients switch gears to a new career, she works hard to quiet the self-doubt that keeps clients wallowing in an unhappy, yet safe job.

We love being comfortable.  Of course, it’s no surprise since our brains are actually wired to avoid scary situations.  The fight or flight response that is triggered when our brain senses danger is meant to ensure our survival.

We either run like hell, or stay and fight.

I’m here to help you fight.

I’m here to help mold you into the confident speaker you can be.

I’m here to help you translate all the genius inside your brain into pithy and persuasive speaking.

And it all starts with making you feel worthy. In short, be your own best friend.

Love yourself relentlessly.

  • Offer yourself compliments and encouragement.
  • Shout out your strengths.
  • Name each favorite quality.
  • List every past success as proof of what you can accomplish.
  • Remember every challenge you have overcome.
  • Stop making excuses.

In other words, get out of your own damn way.
